Pasadena is an independent city in Los Angeles County at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, roughly ten miles northeast of Downtown Los Angeles. It runs its own water and power utility, its own school district, its own police and fire departments, and its own public health department — unusual for a city of its size in the county.
