Pasadena's first Landmark District, designated in 1989, covering about sixteen blocks of Craftsman and California bungalows built largely between 1900 and 1930. Exterior changes are reviewed against preservation standards, which is why the streetscape remains unusually consistent.
About the neighborhood
Flat, gridded streets with deep front porches, low-pitched gable roofs and mature street trees. Lots are modest and setbacks consistent, so the blocks read as a continuous porch line rather than a series of individual statements.
History
The area was subdivided during Pasadena's early-20th-century growth and built out with catalog and builder bungalows. Neighborhood organizing in the 1980s produced the Landmark District designation and the annual home tour that still runs each spring.
Architecture + homes
Craftsman detailing dominates: exposed rafter tails, tapered porch columns on masonry piers, wood shingle and clapboard siding, built-in cabinetry and original double-hung windows. Design review applies to visible exterior alterations.
Parks + outdoors
McDonald Park anchors the district's northern edge with open lawn and a playground; Washington Park sits just beyond it.
Getting around
Primarily a car neighborhood with strong walkability inside the district. Lake Avenue and Washington Boulevard carry the nearest bus service and everyday retail.
